SmoothCut in your notch
- See SmoothCut in your Mac notch. If you use DynamicLake, turn on Settings › AI assistants › Notch: a red dot and a running timer show while you record, you can pause or stop from the notch, and exports show their progress, then a Show in Finder button.
- If SmoothCut's window ever stops unexpectedly, it now reopens with your project instead of leaving a blank window. If it keeps happening, SmoothCut switches to a steadier safe graphics mode, which you can also turn on yourself in Settings › General.
- Got SmoothCut from a friend's recommendation? Enter their referral code in Settings › Licence.
- Bug fixes across recording, exporting and updates.
Export the raw files
- Take your recording into another editor. Export raw files, at the bottom of the Export dialog, gives you the original screen, camera and audio as separate, untouched files, ready for DaVinci Resolve, Premiere or Final Cut, with a note on lining the camera up.
- Your AI assistant can hand you the raw files too: ask it for the originals of a recording.
Your AI assistant can now run SmoothCut
- Let your AI assistant drive SmoothCut. Switch on Settings › AI assistants and connect Claude, Cursor or VS Code in one click, then just ask: "record my screen", "export my last recording as a GIF", or "write release notes from what I said in that demo".
- Free exports work every time again. An export without a licence could fail after you had been editing for a while; it now finishes like any other.
Smoother editing, simpler setup
- On Mac, SmoothCut now asks macOS for Screen & System Audio Recording itself, so it shows up in System Settings without you adding it by hand. If you've already said no once, it opens the right page in System Settings for you.
- After you switch screen recording on, SmoothCut offers a one-click relaunch, since macOS only applies the change to a fresh start.
- Playing a project in the editor takes about half the work it used to, so playback stays smooth with less strain on your computer.
- Opening crop or the area picker no longer slows the editor down for the rest of the session.
- Messages in the recorder appear above its controls instead of covering them, and a Mac without a camera no longer shows a camera error.
- Very large screens and tall windows record without black bars, and the cursor stays where it belongs on them.
Cleaner sound, in sync
- Cleaned audio now lines up with your lips. Cleaned tracks could play up to three quarters of a second ahead of the picture; they now stay in step with it, and older cleaned tracks are redone automatically.
- Cleaning audio is about three times faster and leaves the rest of your computer usable while it works. You can follow its progress from the top bar or the Audio panel, and stop it at any time.
- Exports and shares tell you roughly how long is left, learning from your earlier exports.
- Zooms follow your cursor when you add them. Automatic zooms stay close while you work in one place and pull back while you move across the screen.
- Stopping a long recording shows that it is saving, and a save that fails no longer leaves the recorder stuck.
- You can hide subtitles without deleting them, and the button to regenerate them is now clearly labelled.
- On Mac, SmoothCut explains why macOS may ask about the keychain before it asks.
- Bug fixes in the editor's waveform and playback.
Export for free
- You can now export without a licence. Your video comes out at 720p and 30 fps with a small Made with SmoothCut mark in the corner, so you can see what SmoothCut makes before you pay. A licence takes the mark off and opens every size up to 4K, 60 fps and share links.
- Locked options in the Export window wear a small crown. Press one and SmoothCut tells you what it needs, without getting in the way of exporting.
- Fixed: with noise removal on, an export could run twice and then fail. It now runs once and finishes.
A calmer editor, and one Export for files and links
- The editor has a calmer, clearer look. Every tab now has its name under its icon, in the order you actually finish a video, and none of them hide out of sight any more. On the timeline, the thing you have selected is now the thing that stands out.
- Save a file, share a link, or both, from one Export. Switch on what you want and press once. Ask for both and the link lands on your clipboard first, so you can paste it while the file is still saving.
- Start or stop a recording from any app with Option+Command+R (Ctrl+Alt+R on Windows), even when SmoothCut is in the background. If that clashes with something else you use, change it in Settings under Quick record.
- Started a take you don't want? A new Discard button throws it away and stops, right next to Retake. The countdown now appears inside the Record button, where you're already looking.
- Four new cursor styles: Frost, Signal, Clay and Pixel. Signal is made for tutorials, one bright colour that stays easy to follow on a small screen. They replace the older cursor packs, so a project that used one of those now shows the standard cursor.
- Auto Fix asks simpler questions. Its options are grouped by what you want, tighten the talking, clean up the sound, direct the camera, with one switch for each group.
- Updates stay out of your way. SmoothCut tells you about a new version in its own small window, never on top of a recording, and offers to update before you record rather than in the middle of your work.
- Sounds from the library now download and play with one press, and keep their real names on the timeline. Bug fixes across noise removal, the menu bar and settings.
The cursor is finally where you pointed it
- Fixed the cursor being in the wrong place when recording a specific window instead of the whole screen — it now tracks exactly where you pointed.
- The cursor no longer drifts off target, gets stuck at the frame's edge, or forgets its own shape — it's drawn from the same data your recording actually captured.
- Fixed the cursor showing up at half size on Retina window recordings.
- Cursor smoothing no longer makes the pointer lag behind what you actually did — it could trail by up to half a second at the highest smoothing setting.
- Fixed clicks occasionally being counted twice, which could double up click sounds.
- Renaming a project now stays in sync between the Library and the editor, however you rename it.
Auto Fix gets smarter, and Windows catches up
- Auto Fix does more on its own now — a consistent entrance and exit style for the whole project, slowing down quiet mouse-work instead of cutting it, keeping the camera in frame while you talk hands-free, and adding a sound for every click.
- New: a noise-reduction model for cleaning up noisy audio, downloaded once from onboarding or right in the editor when you need it.
- Windows: captions, silence trimming, and Auto Fix's mistake-finder now actually work — they were silently failing and calling it "no speech detected." Captions are also transcribed from your microphone only now, not whatever else was playing on your machine.
- Windows: clips now show a real waveform and thumbnail, instead of neither ever appearing.
- Windows: recordings are now written the same resilient way Mac's already are, so a crash or force-quit mid-recording usually leaves something recoverable instead of losing the footage.
- Windows: no more false "webcam disconnected" warnings for a camera you never turned on, or a brief hiccup that recovers on its own.
- Fixed a bug where the last second or two of a recording could be silently cut off.
- The Windows installer is smaller, onboarding no longer shows a stray menu bar on Windows, and the way back to your Projects list is visible again in the editor.
Share a project with a link
- Share a project with a link instead of exporting and sending a file. Choose who can open it — anyone, or a password — and the link is ready before the video even finishes rendering.
- A new Shares tab in your Library lists every link you've made — views, size, and when it expires — with buttons to renew, copy, or delete each one.
- Exported files are now named after the recording, not a timestamp, so you can actually find them in Downloads later.
- Bug fixes in exporting: the cursor no longer disappears in an export's opening frames or shows up on the wrong clip.
Usage analytics, and how to turn it off
- SmoothCut can now send us usage data — what features get used and where something fails — to help us know what to build and fix next. It's the shape of what happened, never the content: no file names, file paths, or anything from inside your recordings.
- This is on by default. Turn it off any time from Settings → Privacy, or during onboarding before you ever get started.
Fixes for export, your account, and background images
- Export now shows sizes based on what you actually recorded, instead of defaulting to a resolution lower than what you shot.
- The account menu now shows your real name, email, and plan — it used to say you weren't signed in, even when you were.
- Fixed a bug where choosing a background image could stop your annotations from showing up.
- Bug fixes across the top bar, Auto Fix, subtitles, and the timeline.
Auto Fix catches your spoken mistakes
- Auto Fix now catches mistakes it used to miss. Flub a line, pause, and say it again — Auto Fix hears which take you meant and cuts the other one, even when the words alone look fine.
- The Auto Fix button now has a label, not just an icon, so it's easier to spot in the top bar.
- Bug fixes in the projects window: card menus are no longer clipped, and renaming a project with Cmd+A now selects just the name.
One-click Auto Fix, and a Motion tab for your clips
- Auto Fix can now clean up your whole recording in one click — it transcribes, cuts mistakes and filler words, tightens pauses, cleans up the audio, and adds auto zoom, then shows you a report of what it did.
- Clips now have their own Motion tab for how they enter and leave the frame, with a live preview of each style before you pick it.
- Export shows you exactly what you're getting before you click — resolution, frame rate, quality, and the file size to expect.
- Choose where your projects are saved from Settings, instead of being stuck with the default folder.
The first release of SmoothCut
- Record your screen, a single window, or an area you draw — with system audio, your microphone, and a floating camera bubble, all at once.
- The recorder bar, countdown, camera bubble, and area selector help you while recording, but never show up in the recording itself.
- Your cursor is captured separately from the video, so you can restyle, smooth, or hide it afterward — and no keystrokes are ever recorded, so a password field stays private even while it has focus.
- Cut, change speed, zoom in, and add annotations on a full timeline, with everything you remove still there to bring back.
- Auto Zoom looks at what you actually did while recording — not just where you paused — to decide where to zoom in for you.
- Subtitles are transcribed right on your machine. Nothing about your recording is ever sent anywhere to caption it.
- A library of music and sound effects, voice-over you can record straight onto the timeline, and automatic updates with an optional early-access beta channel.
Licences, and a Settings window that earns its name
- Activate a licence in Settings → Licence. Export asks for one; recording, editing and preview never do.
- Settings moved to a sidebar layout with General, Audio, Models and Licence.
- Licences verify offline. The app checks in quietly every couple of weeks when it can.
