Descript alternative

A Descript alternative for screen recordings, bought once

Descript is an editor for spoken content: delete a word from the transcript and it is gone from the video. It is cloud-based and sold by the month. SmoothCut is a different tool for a different job -- screen recordings that need to look produced -- and it runs on your computer for a single payment.

Why people switch

What is different about SmoothCut

Buy it once

One payment. No monthly fee that keeps running whether you recorded anything this month or not. Personal is $79 for one computer with a year of updates; Pro is $169 for five computers with updates for life.

Everything happens on your computer

Recording, editing, captions, the automatic zooms and cuts, and the final export all run on your Mac or PC. Nothing is uploaded to make it work, so it works on a plane and your recordings stay yours.

The polish is automatic

Zooms follow your cursor. The cursor is smoothed after the fact. Captions are written from your voice. You record, and the demo is most of the way there before you touch the editor.

The other side

When Descript is still the right choice

No tool is right for everyone. If any of these is you, stay where you are.

  • Your videos are mostly people talking -- podcasts, interviews, talking-head -- and you want to edit by deleting text.
  • You need multitrack audio, remote recording or multicam.
  • You want its AI tools: eye contact correction, avatars, translation and dubbing, automatic clips.
  • A team edits the same projects together and comments on them.

Descript and SmoothCut: questions

Does SmoothCut edit by transcript like Descript?

Not in the same way. SmoothCut uses the transcript to find filler words and abandoned takes and cut them for you, but its editor is a timeline. If editing by text is what you want, Descript does that better.

Can I use SmoothCut without uploading my recordings?

Yes. Recording, editing, captions and export all run on your computer. Nothing is uploaded unless you press Share.

Record better videos, faster.

Free to record, edit and preview. Pay once when you are ready to export.
