Most tools in this category are a subscription with a cloud behind it. SmoothCut is an app on your computer that you buy once. This page says exactly what that means, including the one thing that does touch the internet.
What runs on your computer
Everything that makes the video: recording, the automatic zooms and cuts, cursor smoothing, noise removal, captions and the final export. Captions use a speech model you download once; rendering uses your own GPU. There is no upload step and no cloud render queue.
What a share link uploads, and when
Sharing is optional. If you press Share, a web copy of that one export is uploaded so the link can play it. Nothing is uploaded otherwise. Links are unlisted, can be password-protected, and expire after 90 days unless you extend them.
It works offline
Your licence is verified on your own machine. It checks in quietly every couple of weeks when it can, with a month of grace after that, so a flight or a week without a connection changes nothing.
One payment
Personal is one computer with a year of updates; Pro is five computers with every update we ever ship. When a year of updates ends, the version you have keeps working. A licence that needs the network every day is a subscription in disguise, so ours does not.
What the site and app do measure
The website uses analytics to see how it is used, and the app can send anonymous usage data if you leave that on. Neither carries your recordings or their content. The privacy policy lists what is collected and how to turn it off.

- Share links Press Share in SmoothCut and a link is on your clipboard while the video uploads. Viewers react and comment at a timestamp; you can password-protect the link, republish to it, or let it expire.

Do I need an account?
Not to use the app. An account on smoothcut.studio is optional and exists to manage the computers on your licence and your shared links.
Does SmoothCut work without the internet?
Yes. Recording, editing, captions and export all work offline; only sharing a link and the occasional licence check-in use a connection.
What happens to my recordings if I stop paying?
There is nothing to stop paying. It is a one-time purchase, and your recordings are files on your own computer.
