Exporting

Press Export video. Choose MP4 or GIF, the aspect ratio, and the size. Export runs on your GPU, on your computer.

Sizes

720p, 1080p and 4K, limited by the size of what you recorded. A 1440×900 recording cannot be exported at 4K; the editor greys out sizes it cannot honour.

What a licence changes

You can export without a licence. A free export is a real video at 720p and 30 fps, in the Web or Web low quality, with a small animated “Made with SmoothCut” mark in the bottom-right corner.

GIFs are free too, with the same small mark.

A licence, Personal or Pro, takes the mark off and opens everything else: every size up to 4K, 60 fps, all the qualities, a custom bitrate and share links. In the Export dialog, the options a licence opens are marked. Paste a key under Settings → Licence. See Your licence.

Raw files: the original recording, for another editor

SmoothCut keeps everything you record, untouched, at the resolution you captured. Your edits are stored separately, so you can redo the zooms, cursor and cuts at any time.

To take the originals into another editor, such as DaVinci Resolve, Premiere or Final Cut, use Export raw files…. It's at the bottom of the Export dialog, under Raw files, and in the menu on a recording in your library. It works without a licence.

SmoothCut asks where to save, then makes a folder called <recording name> raw with these files, numbered by clip (01, 02, …):

  • 01 screen.mp4: the screen recording, exactly as captured, not re-encoded
  • 01 camera.webm: your camera, if you recorded one
  • 01 mic and 01 system audio: each audio track on its own
  • 01 cursor.ndjson: the cursor's path, for tools that can use it
  • README.txt: what each file is, and how to line the camera up with the screen

The camera starts recording a moment before the screen, so the two files don't start at exactly the same instant. The README gives the exact amount for each clip: trim that much off the start of the camera clip and they line up. None of SmoothCut's edits are applied to these files. An existing folder is never overwritten; a new one gets a number.
